The Town of Cicero, in collaboration with the Morton Arboretum, recently hosted a two-day Urban Forestry Basics Training class. This event took place at the Cicero Community Center, offering professionals and community members an opportunity to expand their knowledge of tree care and urban forestry.

According to Tom Tomschin, Executive Director of Housing, Cicero benefited from a grant awarded by the Morton Arboretum aimed at creating a comprehensive tree inventory and management plan. As a result of this partnership, Cicero hosted the training session, drawing participants from various Illinois communities. “The goal is professional training. You’re only going to get better at what you do,” stated Tomschin. He emphasized that the training enables Cicero's Public Works Department members to apply best practices and enhance community welfare.

The grant facilitates a multifaceted approach to urban forestry, including the tree inventory on public land and the development of a management plan. It also supports the planting and installation of new trees and the training of two Public Works employees to become certified arborists. Tomschin added that two of the five Cicero employees attending the class would further their studies to achieve this certification.

Jane Wandless, Program Manager at the Morton Arboretum, outlined the importance of the training. “This event is designed for individuals who are not professionals in the forestry industry but who work near or manage tree care efforts. It covers essential topics like planting, pruning, tree biology, and preventing damage during construction,” she said. Wandless expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Cicero and highlighted that the Morton Arboretum offers similar training sessions throughout the Chicago area in spring and fall. “Cicero is a great partner, and we’re so happy to be here today.”

The training included practical experiences like an introduction to chainsaw basics and a demonstration of tree removal techniques. Participants gained hands-on experience in safe chainsaw use, enhancing their urban forestry management skills.

Wandless also emphasized the importance of proper tree planting and maintenance, noting that “if a tree is not planted correctly, its survival rate decreases. Learning the correct techniques ensures trees grow strong and thrive for many years.”

By conducting this training, Cicero continues to advance sustainable urban forestry and environmental stewardship, ensuring the health of its green spaces for future generations.
