Fenwick Friars take first place at State Regional math competition

The Fenwick Friars took first place on Saturday at the Illinois Council Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) High School State Regional math competition hosted by Niles West, qualifying the 36-member team for the State Final competition in April 2025.

The Friars won 14 individual awards, including perfect scores by Cole Ude and Kyra Miller in Precalculus, and won team awards in all 10 events, including five first places.  Fifty-five teams competed in the Division 2A regional match-up.  

Four of the top ten finishers were Catholic high schools.

The Fenwick team is led by alumnus and Head Coach Roger Finnel along with assistant coaches: Brigid Esposito, Bozena Kopf, Maria Nowicki, and Andrew Reuland. 

The Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) competition has four divisions based on school size and ten events including: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculator Team, Junior/Senior 2 Person Team, Freshman/sophomore 8 Person Team, Freshman/Sophomore 2 Person Team, Junior/Senior 8 Person Team, and an Oral category.

Fenwick last won the ICTM State Championship in 2022.  

The team has won first place 15 of the last 22 years in the Archdiocese of Chicago Math Contest and tied for first earlier this year.
