A portion of the nearly 18,000 parkway trees in the Village is set for pruning this winter. The focus will be on trees located south of the I-290 expressway, as well as those in Oak Park's section south of Madison Street, west of East Avenue, and north of I-290.
The pruning process follows guidelines from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to address tree health, resident safety, and property protection. This involves removing dead or dying limbs, raising tree canopies for safe vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and creating appropriate clearances for nearby structures and signs.
Pruning also targets younger trees to foster good structure and reduce future problems. While more noticeable without leaves on the branches during winter, crews ensure proper pruning to accommodate foliage return in spring.
The Village aims to prune every public tree once every four years. With parkway trees potentially growing up to two feet annually, plans account for an eight-foot growth between cycles. The program has successfully minimized storm damage and reduced ongoing pruning requests.
