Residents of Cicero gathered at the Cicero Community Park for the town's annual Christmas Tree Lighting, despite temperatures in the mid-to-low 20s. The event marked the start of the holiday season with various activities and community spirit.

The celebration took place on Sunday, December 1st, 2024, bringing together friends, neighbors, and families. Organized by the Department of Special Events, the night featured holiday music, treats, and activities for all ages.

Highlights included hot chocolate and festivities such as the opening of an ice rink. The event culminated in the much-anticipated lighting of the Christmas tree.

Patty Salerno, Director of Special Events, addressed attendees: “Hello everybody. Thank you for coming out on this chilly day,” she said. “On behalf of President Larry Dominick and the board of trustees, we welcome you to our annual Christmas tree lighting. If we can get a countdown, please, from 10!”

The crowd joined in a countdown before witnessing the tree light up. Applause followed as its lights cast a warm glow over the park.

Salerno invited attendees to enjoy crafts and horse carriage rides: “Thank you, everybody. We hope you stay and enjoy our crafts and horse carriage rides,” she said. “Get on the ice and make sure the kids get to see Santa.”

Salerno highlighted the event's importance: “This event has always had a great turnout. It’s a way to kick off our holiday season for our residents, kids, and families."

She also emphasized community dedication: “President Dominick’s goal is always to have community events for our families...99% of our events are completely free."

Children met Santa Claus during the evening's festivities. Santa shared his wish for cookies over carrots since reindeer take those.

Young attendee Auriyana Montenegro expressed her love for Oreos when asked about favorite cookies by Santa.

Before leaving, Santa assured everyone he would be back: “I will show up on Christmas! Merry Christmas!!”

The evening continued with horse-drawn carriage rides and ice skating amid holiday cheer.
