Today marked the groundbreaking of a significant infrastructure project in southwest Cook County, Illinois. The $28.6 million initiative aims to improve roadway and bridge access at the I-294 interchange on 88th/Cork Avenue in the Village of Justice.
The project will address existing traffic bottlenecks by adding a new interchange with I-294, improving intersections, and modernizing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, enhancements to lighting and drainage systems are planned.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle emphasized the collaborative nature of this effort: “This project was truly a team effort, combining the resources of local, state and federal governments to ensure its success.” She noted that improved travel efficiency would also lead to enhanced economic opportunities for businesses.
The development is expected to attract private investments, create jobs, alleviate congestion on nearby tollway ramps, and benefit local business districts reliant on efficient freight movement.
This project results from collaboration between Cook County, the Illinois Tollway, Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and the Village of Justice. Funding includes $13.4 million from federal Illinois Competitive Freight Program funds secured by Cook County. Additional contributions include $10.7 million from Motor Fuel Tax and Rebuild Illinois Bond funds by Cook County, $4.1 million from the Illinois Tollway, and $350,000 from the Village of Justice.
U.S. Representative Sean Casten (IL-6) highlighted the role of government funding: "This new interchange is a great example of state and federal funding working to benefit the community."
Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman added: “Under the leadership of Gov. Pritzker, IDOT is working more than ever with our partners and stakeholders to arrive at solutions that improve regional access and mobility.”
Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse remarked on the significance of partnerships: “Today’s event highlights what we can achieve together.”
The improvements are scheduled for completion by 2026. Motorists should plan for additional travel time through this area during construction activities.
