The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has initiated a project to enhance the intersection at 47th Street and Eberly/East Avenue. This intersection, which is used by the Village of Brookfield, LaGrange, and McCook, will undergo significant changes over the next two years.

Currently, construction work is limited to the parkway south of the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad crossing. However, starting mid-November, traffic will be more noticeably affected. The improvements necessitate daily lane closures on 47th Street and Eberly/East Avenue as they approach the intersection.

From Tuesday, November 12 onwards, eastbound 47th Street between Plainfield Road and Eberly/East Avenue will be closed. Additionally, westbound traffic on 47th Street will be reduced from two lanes to one lane. Northbound lanes on Eberly/East Avenue between 47th Street and 55th Street will also be closed while southbound lanes remain open. Motorists are advised to follow posted detours.

The $18 million project has been in planning since 2014. It aims to transform the existing four-way stop sign into an intersection managed by traffic signals with dedicated turn lanes. Other improvements include enhanced lighting and ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad crossing just west of this intersection is also part of this upgrade.

Completion of this project is expected in fall 2026. Motorists should anticipate delays and are encouraged to plan for extra travel time or consider alternate routes.
