On September 10, 2024, the Cicero community gathered at the Cicero Community Park for the third Pet Food Pantry drive-thru event, hosted by the Town of Cicero and Waggin’ Tails Animal Shelter. Starting an hour early due to a large turnout, volunteers provided essential resources for local pets in need.

Samantha Boron from Waggin’ Tails Animal Shelter shared the mission of the event: “Today we brought 20 pallets of cat and dog food out and a hundred dog beds and donated it to the community. So far we’ve had 330 cars show up, we’re hoping for more. We’re out here until we run out. The goal is to host this once a month and help the community. Dog and cat food is very expensive. Cat litter is very expensive if we get it we will give it out.”

Cicero Town President Larry Dominick expressed his gratitude for the drive, saying, “It’s a blessing that we can do this. There’s so many people that love animals and some people can’t afford to give them the food they deserve, so this helps out. I’m very happy to see this. Thanks for all the help and to the donors.”

The drive had support from multiple organizations. Officer Jerry Roman, representing the Sheriff’s office and Tales of Redemption, highlighted their contributions: “Waggin’ Tails, Greater Good, and Rescue Pack saw the need for resources in the community, so we combined efforts. Everybody doesn’t have to have a vehicle. They can walk up, take the bus, bring their buggies, and pick up resources for their pets.” He also shared details about Tales of Redemption: “Up to date now, all five of our comfort dogs have been sourced out of the Cicero animal shelter, and we have two more in training.”

Brin Donnelly, Executive Vice President of Greater Food Charities emphasized such initiatives' importance: “We say our mission is to serve people, pets, and the planet. We do that by providing products like you see behind us. Today is amazing because we get to do a little of both helping people who are struggling to feed their pets.”

Rescue Pack Director Kathy Weisner shared how their organization tackles pet food insecurity: “Our partner is Greater Good Charities; wherever they have overstock or food that’s about to expire they donate it to us then we’re able share with public... plan host these monthly been talking setting permanent pet pantry inside shelter.”

The event highlighted Cicero’s commitment ensuring no animal goes without food or comfort ongoing support organizations Pet Food Pantry set regular much-needed service.
