Despite nearly 100-degree weather, the annual Back to School Fair at Cicero Community Park was a success this past Sunday, August 4th, as nearly 2,000 community members gathered to celebrate the start of a new school year. The event, which began at 3 PM, offered a mix of activities, resources, and entertainment for students and families.

Organized by Cicero District 99 and the Town of Cicero, the fair aimed to ensure that every child in the community is prepared and excited for the upcoming academic year. Local businesses, non-profits, and volunteers provided school supplies, book bags, and information on educational programs.

Over 1,500 supply kits and 500 book bags were distributed by District 99 employees.

“We are thrilled with the turnout,” said District 99 Superintendent Dr. Aldo Calderin. “Seeing the community come together to support our students is truly heartwarming. It’s a testament to the strength and unity of Cicero.”

The first person arrived at 9 AM to get in line then switched with his wife at noon. This teamwork enabled their family to receive school supplies for their children.

“I am very excited to start school,” said Auriyana Montenegro. She also shared her favorite subjects are math and reading.

“It starts at our core values and being supportive of our community,” added Dr. Calderin. “It’s important to support the community, the students and families.”

While parents stood in line kids took advantage of water sprinkles to cool off.

“I am here for my school supplies,” said Glestad Rodriguez who was waiting in line with her grandmother.

Highlights of the fair included live music, snow cones, popcorn, hotdogs and interactive booths. Children enjoyed multiple bounce houses and various games while parents received free school supply kits and book bags.

“Giving to the community is one of my favorite things we do as a company,” said Colley Gustafson-Verbick an email developer at Ascendent. Ascendent has been donating backpacks to Cicero for many years. “I think it really is just a great thing to get involved in the communities that we are in.”

In September Ascendent will be giving away backpacks to Roosevelt Elementary students.

Several local leaders were present including Town Trustee Blanca Vargas who emphasized the importance of community events in fostering a positive environment for students. “Education is the foundation of our future, and it’s wonderful to see so many people here today dedicated to making sure our children have what they need to succeed,” said Trustee Vargas.

Many parents expressed their gratitude noting that supplies provided were a significant help.

“We are going to make sure the kids have the right foundation to start school. It’s one less thing for mom and dad to worry about,” said Cicero District 99 Board President Tom Tomschin.

As the event concluded it was clear that the Back-to-School Fair had succeeded in its mission supporting Cicero's community. Organizers look forward to next year’s fair aiming for an even bigger event.
