A recent proposal to convert Amundsen Park in North Austin into a migrant shelter has ignited controversy within the community.
With approximately 500 attendees, a community meeting was organized by Ald. Chris Taliaferro, providing a platform for residents to express their views regarding the potential use of Amundsen Park as a shelter for illegal immigrants.
Independent journalist and activist Mark Weyermuller reported on the heated discussion, capturing the attention of residents and shedding light on the controversial topic.
“Amundsen Park community meeting with about 500 in attendance to discuss housing hundreds of migrants in this Chicago park district gym,” Weyermuller said on X.
Amundsen Park, located at 6200 W. Bloomingdale Ave. in Galewood, is a 16-acre facility that houses various amenities, including a fieldhouse with a gym, fitness center, and meeting rooms, as well as outdoor sports facilities.
The impact on regular park programming and the use of its facilities remains uncertain at this point.
Crowds at the community meeting passionately chanted slogans like "You work for us! You work for us!" as seen in video footage posted by Weyermuller.
“Galewood residents protest plan to let 200 illegal aliens live at Amundsen Park,” Wyermuller said in another post on X.
The proposal to house around 200 migrants within the park has generated varied responses from the community, with some expressing opposition and others questioning the allocation of resources and attention in relation to unhoused Chicago residents.
Galewood neighbors Oak Park, which has previously passed several "welcoming" resolutions promising to provide sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.
