The Oak Park Village Board of Trustees heard the first reading of a code ordinance during its March 6 session that would revise parking permit requirements and could lead to a reduced rate for parking tags for some residents.
During the session, which was streamed on YouTube, the board noted that parking is at a premium in the village, which was developed decades ago in the days before it was normal for families to have at least one vehicle. Parking and Mobility manager Sean Keane told the board about a new parking permit system under consideration that would control traffic issues, with permits being renewed annually before July 14.
“Depending on which permit somebody would purchase, you would save between 57% to 81% off the normal prices,” Keane said. “Currently, the program, the parameters that we're proposing is that if you participate in the Housing Choice voucher program through the Oak Park Housing Authority, you would be eligible for these reduced parking permits.”
Moreover, Keane also told the board suggestions about possible changes were made by several residents and committees, leading to the recommendation that Housing Choice participants receive discounted parking rates. He added that the panel is considering other ways to determine eligibility, and if any ideas come up, they could be added to the second reading of the ordinance or the board could vote on them after the ordinance is adopted.
Keane told the board that eligible residents can receive significant savings by applying with the village, proving their residency and eligibility. They will then get $50 off each quarter for each vehicle, the board learned, adding that this applies to all parking permits.
The board approved the first reading of the ordinance and will vote on adoption at its next regular meeting later this month.
