The River Forest District 90 cites inefficiency as the reason it does not recite the Pledge of Allegiance at its meetings.

River Forest District 90 is one of only five school districts in West Cook County that does not recite the Pledge of Allegiance before school board meetings.

A school district representative told West Cook News that saying the Pledge is "inefficient."

"The River Forest District 90 Board of Education does not recite the Pledge of Allegiance at its meetings since meeting efficiency has always been a primary goal. However, the American flag is posted at all meeting locations when the Board of Education is in session," District Communications and Community Outreach Coordinator Dawne Simmons said.

At just 31 words in length, the pledge takes roughly 10 seconds to recite.

The issue has kicked up in the region following the Village of River Forest’s recent adoption of a “land use” statement as opposed to reciting the pledge.

In comparison, the "land use statement" read before Oak Park District 97 meetings is 68 words, taking over twice as long to recite.

West Cook News recently reported three of the four tribes named in the land use statement did not live in the area and that two of them – the Ojibwa and Chippewa –  are actually the same tribe.
