Cicero School District 99 Board of Education Met Feb. 22.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

I. The meeting was called to order by President Tomschin at 5:02 p.m.

II. Roll call was conducted and the following members were recorded present: President Tomschin, Vice-President Polk, Secretary Terracino and Member Couch. Absent: Members Rueda, Segura and Dominick. An interpreter was present.

It was noted and posted that community members who would like the opportunity to make a public comment during the designated time must register by visiting https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/635091523451417869 on either their computer or mobile device, where they would be asked to enter their name and email address, after which they would be sent a confirmation email with information on how to join the meeting. Community members who wish to only listen in to the meeting should dial (562) 247-8422 and enter access code 558-562-005. It was noted that if dialing in, they would not have the opportunity to make a public comment. It was also noted that per Board Policy 2:230, all public comments were limited to 3 minutes.

III. A quorum was established.

IV. The pledge to the flag was recited.

V. Comments from the audience via conference call or in person

Josefina Arenas, parent, thanked the Board and the Superintendent for providing our students with Chromebook and supplies during this difficult time. She also acknowledged the teachers who have been adjusting to the new system of learning. She said that since her kids have been at home, her family has experienced first hand, the effects of anxiety due to mental health issues incurred due to being home. She indicated she knows it is difficult times, but she asked the teachers to reconsider coming back to school for the children.

VI. President Tomschin asked if there was a need to adjourn into Executive Session. It was the consensus of the Board there was no need for Executive Session.

VII. Action Items

A. Approval of Memorandum of Understanding between Cicero Council Union, Teachers Unit, PSRP Unit and Secretaries Unit, West Suburban Teachers Union, Local 571, IFT-AFT (Union) and Board of Education, Cicero School District 99 (District) to clarify the conditions for a safe and healthy environment under which instruction will be conducted during the 2020-2021 school year due to current COVID-19 Pandemic

It was moved by Vice-President Polk and seconded by Secretary Terracino to approve the Memorandum of Understanding between Cicero Council Union, Teachers Unit, PSRP Unit and Secretaries Unit, West Suburban Teachers Union, Local 571, IFT-AFT (Union) and Board of Education, Cicero School District 99 (District) to clarify the conditions for a safe and healthy environment under which instruction will be conducted during the 2020-2021 school year due to current COVID-19 Pandemic. Roll call: Yeas: President Tomschin, Vice-President Polk, Secretary Terracino and Member Couch. Nays: None. Absent: Members Rueda, Segura and Dominick. Motion carried.

VIII. Old Business

There was no old business to report.

IX. President Tomschin informed the audience that the next regularly scheduled Board Meeting would be held on March 10, 2021, 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.

President Tomschin thanked everyone involved with the Memorandum of Understanding, from the teacher’s Union leadership, teacher’s frontline workers, Administration and Board members who have volunteered countless hours of their life. He indicated he speaks for them all, but can’t wait for the children to return to the hybrid model of in-person learning and was looking forward to them giving back a sense of normalcy, not just in the Town of Cicero, but in the United States and globally.

X. Adjournment

It was moved by Vice-President Polk and seconded by Member Couch to adjourn from Open Session at 5:07 p.m. Roll call: Yeas: President Tomschin, Vice-President Polk, Secretary Terracino and Member Couch. Nays: None. Absent: Members Rueda, Segura and Dominick. Motion carried.
