Ashley Kilburg’s run for the Maine Township High School District 207 board is about taking a stand against Gov. J.B. Pritzker.

“District 207’s biggest challenge is Gov. Pritzker’s Feb. 5, eight-page disaster proclamation containing only four lines about Illinois students’ education and just one specific directive ‘to continue to alleviate any barriers to the use of remote learning,’” Kilburg posted to Facebook in March. “The school board must address the fact that the proclamation fails to consider the mental devastation caused to the young and painful disruption to the schedules of working parents by school closings during the pandemic.”

Kilburg said proof of all the damage caused by the shutdowns is everywhere.

“Students who used to do well in school are failing academically and suffering emotionally,” she said. “On Feb. 3, the director of the CDC says schools may now safely reopen. Given this federal guidance regarding health and education, why aren’t Illinois schools following those guidelines and supporting our children’s needs.”

However, federal guidelines have recommended schools reopen if they meet specific requirements and can be done so in a safe format.

Kilburg said her whole focus is making certain students have their best chance of being all they can be.

“My candidacy is based on my dedication to this community and to education,” she added. “I am running for District 207 because I would like to contribute to the essential issue of how to educate our children. With the ubiquity of technological images, traditional reading and writing skills need to be emphasized.”

Kilburg resides in Park Ridge with her young children and husband, Jeff, a Maine South High graduate.
