AMITA Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on Mar. 12.
Prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 11 million children in the U.S. weren't getting enough food to eat every day, lacking access to enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle. After a year of the pandemic, that already unbelievable number has grown to an estimated 18 million American children. That's one in seven children in the U.S. facing hunger.
AMITA Health has partnered with Chicago-based Advocatia Solutions in offering free assistance in accessing federal, state and local programs to help the children of our communities get the food they need, including the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
Federal nutrition programs such as these are some of the most effective ways to help, by either providing low-income families with money to purchase monthly food or by helping pregnant or nursing women and children under the age of five.
Research shows that addressing food insecurities can improve test scores at school, driving attendance and graduation rates. Having access to these vital programs not only impacts nutrition for the family and fosters community wellness, but it also offers a sense of security and stability.
Anyone experiencing food insecurity should reach out to learn more about assistance and be walked through the enrollment process, if needed. The service is offered at no charge for Chicagoland residents, regardless of where they receive their healthcare. Simply contact our AMITA Health enrollment specialists by visiting AMITAhealth.org/enroll, calling 312.584.1212 or texting "AMITA" to 312.586.9711.
And don't forget a special enrollment period for the Healthcare Insurance Marketplace is in effect until May 15, 2021 and AMITA Health is here to help with that, as well. Assistance with enrollment is also available at AMITAhealth.org/enroll, by calling 262.275.4181 or texting "AMITA" to 312.586.9711.
