Berwyn North School District 98 Board of Education met Oct. 24.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

A Regular Meeting of the Board of Education Members of Berwyn North School District 98 was held Thursday, October 24, 2019, beginning at 6:30 PM in the Havlicek Elementary School - Commons Room 6401 15th Street, Berwyn, Illinois 60402.

I. CALL TO ORDER

Meeting began at 6:34pm

II. ROLL CALL

Members Present: Mounce, Swade, and Pabon Members Absent: Paul-Emile and Cuevas Members Late on arrival: Arenella (6:38pm) and Kulis-Kearns Valeriano (6:39pm)

III. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

The Pledge of Allegiance 3rd Grade Students are:

• Lorenzo Anaya

IV. COMMUNICATIONS

A. District 98 Position Surrounding Immigration:

Superintendent Michelle Smith read to the community Berwyn North District 98 School Board of Education’s stance on surrounding immigration issues. 

B. Student Ambassadors:

Student Ambassadors Analysee Castillo and Ivan Resendiz greeted the Board and community. They prepared a brief presentation to introduce themselves and present their future topics for upcoming presentations to the Board and community. 

C. Achievement Data Presentations:

This communication was tabled to the November Board Meeting since the information contained is imperative data that all Board Members must be present to receive. In lieu of the Data Presentation Dr. Alexandra Escobar, Assistant Superintendent wanted to inform the Board and community of the need for Kindergarten through Second Grade Curriculum materials and how imperative these materials are for this group.

V. PUBLIC COMMENT

A. Gina Parker, NBEA President and Physical Education teacher at Prairie Oak wanted to address Superintendent Smith and the Board in regards to the Board of Education and District 98’s stance to protect our community and families with the matter of immigration. Ms. Parker was wearing a “Dreamers Welcomed” T-shirt to the meeting in support. 

B. Nadine Cloherty and Donna Miller, Teachers at Havlicek and members of IEA introduced themselves to the Board and Community. 

C. Jennifer Danek-Parker and Joshua Bomba, Teachers at Lincoln Middle School and Student Ambassadors mentors introduced themselves to the Board and community.

D. University Students attending the Board Meeting as a class project wanted to congratulate and commend Berwyn North District 98 on having Student Ambassadors to participate at Board Meetings. They have been at other districts Board meetings and none have had Student Ambassadors. They praised the Student Ambassadors on expressing themselves and being well versed during their presentation.

VI. BOARD COMMENT

A. Member Mounce wanted to remind the Board and community that November 11, 2019 is Veterans Day. He wanted to make sure that the veterans who have fought for our country are remembered and honored. 

B. Member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano wanted to inform the Board and community that just like teachers receive professional development training so do Board members and that there are resources for Board members to receive training and information. Mrs. Valeriano wanted to speak about the meeting she just attended through IASB with the topic of “Bullying” and “0 Tolerance” and the law that governs those. The fact that when consequences are given the Board should look at the entire child’s history not just what that child did wrong. She also informed the community that the Board will be participating in a National Conference in November. 

C. Member Swade wanted to acknowledge to the Board and community that Prairie Oak Elementary held a Family Literacy Night on October 23rd, which showcased six well organized stations. He wanted to emphasize how successful the event was. Mr. Swade also wanted to thank Berwyn North District 98 for participating in the Mural event and providing district buses that helped facilitate the event. 

D. Superintendent Smith thanked Mayor Lovero and Alderman Ralph Avila for attending Unity Day at Jefferson

Elementary School.

• Georgine Mullen, Speech Language Pathologist at Prairie Oak, requesting one semester leave of absence starting November 22, 2019 through January 31, 2020

• Sara Tlusty, SPED Teacher at Lincoln, 12 week FMLA, starting March 2, 2020 through June 2, 2020

• Teresa Barajas, Home, School, Community Liaison, District Office 12 week FMLA, starting December 2, 2019 through February 28, 2020

3. Resignation:

• Diana Ledesma, Program Assistant at Havlicek, has submitted a Letter of Resignation effective October 11, 2019

Member Arenella moved and was seconded by Member Pabon that the Board approve the following items listed on the Consent Agenda. Approval of Minutes items A 1-4, Personnel B 1-3, Finance C 1-3 and Building Use D-1 as submitted.

A. Resolution for School Board Member's Day - November 15, 2019

APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER’S DAY – NOVEMBER 15, 2019 

Member Arenella moved and was seconded by member Pabon that the Board approve to Adopt the Resolution for School Board Member’s Day – November 15, 2019.

B. Resolution for American Education Week - November 18 - 22, 2019

APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION FOR AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK – NOVEMBER 18-22, 2019 

Member Arenella moved and was seconded by member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano that the Board Approve the Resolution to Adopt the Resolution for American Education Week – November 18-22, 2019.

C. Resolution for Educational Support Professional Day - November 20, 2019

Member Arenella moved and was seconded by member Swade that the Board Approve the Resolution to Adopt the Resolution for Education Support Day – November 20, 2019.

Regina Johnson, Business Manager, presented the monthly fund report to the Board and community.

Resolutions will be deliberated by Board Members at the Joint Conference in November.

XIV. ADOURNMENT MOTION TO EXECUTIVE SESSION

Member Arenella moved and was seconded by Member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano that the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, School District 98 Adjourn to Executive Session at 7:26 p.m., Thursday, October 24, 2019 for the purpose of discussing the following items:

1. The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity. 5ILCS 120/2(c) (1). (Open Meetings Act Exception #1)

2. The Purchase or lease of real property for the use of the public body, including meetings held for the purpose of discussing whether a particular parcel purpose of discussing whether a particular parcel should be acquired. 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(4).(Open Meetings Act #5)

Member Pabon moved and was seconded by Member Kulis-Kearns Valeriano that the Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, District 98 reconvenes from Executive Session at 8:19 p.m., Thursday, October 24, 2019.
