CHICAGO VETERINARY MEDICAL FOUNDATION: Veterinarian had one shot to hit orca with antibiotic dart

Injection

Chicago Veterinary Medical Foundation issued the following announcement on Sept. 7.

Vancouver Aquarium head veterinarian Martin Haulena shot an antibiotic-laden dart into J50, a young, female orca believed to be on the verge of dying, and though he has darted entangled sea lions, conditions and his timing had to be perfect to dart the orca. "Darting a moving whale that only has a bit of itself out of the water from a moving boat, that is definitely a little bit different," said Dr. Haulena, whose shot hit its mark.
