Illinois 52nd District State Representative Martin McLaughlin emphasized the importance of voters understanding their representation and local processes to enhance civic participation. His remarks were made during an appearance on the Prairie State Wire Podcast.
"I think the best thing that voters can do is to get involved in their local politics," said Martin J. Mclaughlin, State Representative from Illinois. "Once you find out who represents you at every level and you find out what the processes are, you'll be sick to your stomach. You won't believe how poorly the government represents you, and then you'll probably come off the sidelines and try to get involved."
According to WBEZ, civic engagement in Illinois at the local level remains inconsistent, with municipal and school elections attracting significantly fewer voters compared to statewide contests. Recent election cycles in Chicago have highlighted persistent gaps in voter participation. Analysts and officials attribute this to off-cycle timing and limited information, which they say reduce interest even though local offices significantly influence taxes, schools, and services. Efforts are underway to increase turnout through early voting and mail options.
In Madison County, turnout for consolidated local elections—encompassing municipalities, school boards, townships, and special districts—was recorded at 16.95% in 2021 and 13.38% in 2023. The Telegraph reports that these figures underscore chronically low participation rates during off-year cycles when compared to presidential election years. Officials note that despite their direct impact on communities, local contests often see lower voter engagement.
CBS Chicago reports that Chicago's municipal voter turnout decreased after 2020; the city election in 2023 attracted 32.6% of registered voters, down from approximately 35% in 2019. This decline occurred despite a competitive mayoral race and was attributed by analysts to election timing and limited voter engagement.
McLaughlin is a Republican state representative for Illinois’ 52nd District who took office on January 13, 2021. Prior to his legislative role, he served as Barrington Hills village president and worked in pension management. According to the Illinois General Assembly, his official biography highlights a focus on fiscal and governance issues alongside his local civic leadership roles.
