Oak Park FD responds to 135 fires in 2017

Oak Park Fire Department responded to 739 calls in 2017 - 9.6 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Oak Park included 135 fires - 83 structure fires, 10 vehicle fires and 42 other fires. The fire department also responded to eight calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,252,124 in fire loss - or about $9,275 per fire.

The department also received 596 false calls, including 20 malicious calls and 576 other false calls.

The calls resulted in three civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Oak Park Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 61 active employees and 116 retired or inactive employees, was $2,643,946 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $20,496 for every fire in 2016.
