All-school testing day Sept. 13 for PMSA, Proviso East, West

Test 08

All-school testing day will take place Sept. 13 for freshmen, sophomores and juniors at Proviso Math and Science Academy, Proviso East High School and Proviso West High School.

The testing session will include four parts: science, reading, math and English. In preparation for the SAT college entrance exam, freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take a practice SAT. Juniors will take the official SAT in the spring.

Students should be prepared to take the tests, Diane Deckert, director of assessment and planning for the district, said. The tests help district leaders determine the needs of students, as well as determine the quality of the courses within the district’s schools.

“These tests are not only a reflection of our schools, but the skills of our students,” Deckert said. “Our students are as talented as any in the state. We are looking for them to perform at a level that shows what their abilities are.”

Students should report to their designated testing area at 7:50 a.m.

Testing is scheduled to end at 12:55 p.m., and students will be given a bagged lunch from their respective schools' cafeterias before the 1:35 p.m. dismissal and bus-loading time.

Jesse Rodríguez, superintendent of District 209, encourages students and their parents to take the tests seriously and prepare as much as possible.

“We have an obligation to do everything we can to help prepare our students to perform at high levels,” Rodríguez said. “The data we receive from these exams will inform our instruction for the rest of the year, and we can know what is needed to modify our instruction to help our students grow academically. These tests also are a good predictor of how they will perform on the SAT in the future, so they need to be ready for the exams.”

Seniors will not take part in the testing and can use the day to go on self-planned college tours or complete community service requirements.
