The Village of Brookfield’s Community and Economic Development Department (CEDD) won the Public Agency category in the five to 24 employee tier of the 25th Annual Bike Commuter Challenge, sponsored by the Active Transportation Alliance.
Each year in the Chicago area, businesses, nonprofits, and public agencies team up to promote commuting by bike instead of less environmentally friendly methods. The Bike Commuter Challenge 2016 took place the week of June 10-17 and included 3,635 participants formed into 268 teams who biked almost 100,000 miles total.
The CEDD had four employees ride a bike during the week to earn the winning participation rate with 67 percent. Brookfield employees made 39 trips for a total of 307.2 miles, placing them 78th among all teams and seventh in the public agency category.
The Village of Brookfield is dedicating to making the area more bicycle friendly, including a Complete Streets policy for bike and walking accessibility and safety. The village also held its own bike event earlier in 2016 called Bike Brookfield.
