The village of River Forest Board of Trustees will consider seven amendments to the village's historic preservation ordinance Feb. 22 that would change the rules for demolishing historically significant buildings.
The amendments have been proposed by the River Forest Historic Preservation Commission and would give the commission the authority to intervene in the demolition proceedings of a building if it were deemed to be architecturally or historically important.
The changes would require owners of significant buildings to present their plans to the commission in person at a commission meeting, establish a review and appeals process to create enough time to seek alternatives to demolition, shorten the review period for alternations to significant buildings from 45 to 30 days, shorten the commission's review period for windows on significant buildings from 45 to seven days, allow a commission subcommittee to stand in for the commission if the whole commission in unable to be assembled to conduct a particular review, allow third-party nominations of historical landmarks, and grant the commission Certified Local Government status to aid in fundraising.
The meeting, which will include a public hearing on the proposed changes, is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Elementary School, 511 N. Park Ave.
