Brookfield has launched its 2025 Fire Hydrant Painting Project, with contractor Go Painters beginning work last week in the north section of the Village. The project aims to paint 225 hydrants throughout Brookfield, marking the final phase of a multi-year effort.
In previous years, Go Painters painted 250 hydrants in 2023 and approximately 400 in 2024. The completion of this year's work will conclude the fire hydrant painting initiative in the Village.
The scope of the project includes preparing and protecting areas around each hydrant, sandblasting the existing paint according to SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning standards, and applying a coat of SW MACROPOXY 646 UNIVERSAL METAL PRIMER, typically in white or pink. After priming, a topcoat of SW Acrolon 218HS safety color paint is applied. Each hydrant receives two colors: one for the barrel and another for the bonnet and streamer ports. This color scheme reflects the hydrant's fire flow and complies with Insurance Services Office (ISO) standards.
The ISO system uses bonnet colors to indicate a hydrant's gallon-per-minute (GPM) flow rate: blue for 1,500 GPM or greater, green for 1,000–1,499 GPM, orange for 500–999 GPM, and red for less than 500 GPM. This coding helps the Fire Department quickly assess available water volume during emergencies.
