Cicero residents gathered on August 5 to mark the annual National Night Out, an event designed to foster relationships between the community and public safety officials. The event, now in its 42nd year nationally and approaching two decades in Cicero, was organized by the Special Events Department with support from Town President Larry Dominick, the Board of Trustees, and all municipal departments.
Town President Larry Dominick highlighted the significance of National Night Out for Cicero. “National Night Out is important everywhere, but in Cicero, we go the extra mile. It brings the community together, especially the kids, to interact with police in a positive way and shows that summer is winding down and school is right around the corner.”
Special Events Director Patricia Salerno reflected on her long involvement with the event. “This is my 18th year helping with National Night Out, and every year it gets bigger and better,” she said. “It’s about bringing people together, having fun, and showing how much our town cares.”
Attendees participated in a variety of free activities such as pony rides, a petting zoo, carnival treats, senior bingo, and booths offering services like pet tag engraving and school supplies. Local barber and beauty school How to Fade provided complimentary haircuts and manicures. Members of the Cicero Police and Fire Departments were present throughout the evening to engage with children and provide information about their services.
A notable moment took place at the Cicero Community Center where First Lady Diana Dominick hosted a Bingo night for seniors. President Dominick joined her to call out numbers during the game.
Afterwards, President Dominick mingled with attendees in the courtyard area.
The Parent Patrol program was also promoted during National Night Out. The initiative encourages parents to volunteer their time ensuring student safety as they travel to and from school.
“We call on our community to get involved,” said Town Chaplain and Parent Patrol Leader Ismael Vargas. “Becoming a Parent Patrol is one of the best ways to give back.”
Blanca Vargas, Cicero Town Trustee, expressed appreciation for those who made the event possible. “This event is joyful and important. It brings together seniors, young adults, and children, while also highlighting the services our town provides. We thank President Dominick and the Special Events team for always thinking of us.”
As families departed at sunset with treats in hand, organizers thanked everyone who contributed to making this year’s National Night Out successful.
