On May 23, ComEd informed suburban municipal leaders about an upcoming increase in residential electricity bills for customers receiving power from ComEd. Starting June 1, the average electric bill is expected to rise by $10.60, though this will vary depending on energy usage and supplier. ComEd could not estimate the impact on customers using different energy suppliers.

The increase is attributed to PJM Interconnection, which manages energy markets and grid operations in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions. Factors such as power plant retirements, increased load, changes to market rules, and extreme weather have led to higher auction-based capacity prices affecting consumer costs.

ComEd clarified that they do not set the capacity charge but pass it along without markup. Other suppliers may handle these charges differently.

To assist customers with managing their bills, ComEd offers programs including payment plans for those with overdue accounts. More information can be found at ComEd.com/BillSupport.
