In the late 1950s, Western Springs engaged in a program aimed at fostering international peace and understanding by pairing communities worldwide. Through this initiative, Western Springs became twinned with Rugeley, England. The two towns share similarities in size and are located at comparable distances from major cities—Rugeley from Birmingham and Western Springs from Chicago. As a nod to this connection, Rugeley Road in the Springdale subdivision was named after the English town.
Recently, members of the Western Springs Historical Society re-established contact with residents and officials from Rugeley. Consequently, Village Trustees have declared May 23, 2025, as "Rugeley Day" in Western Springs.
Residents can expect to see UK and USA flags displayed at Village Hall to celebrate the friendship between these municipalities. The Western Springs Historical Society (WSHS) plans to hold a brief ceremony at the Historic Water Tower on Friday, May 23, at 4 p.m., marking the enduring relationship with their Sister City and capturing a group photo. Additionally, WSHS will screen a 16mm film of the inaugural Rugeley Day in Western Springs from May 23, 1959, alongside a preview of the new Rugeley Day exhibit at the Tower Museum.
