The Brookfield Police Department is participating in the national "Click It or Ticket" campaign, urging drivers to use seat belts. This initiative, which runs from May 16 to May 27, aligns with the Memorial Day holiday period.

Lt. Nicholas Hahn of the Brookfield Police Department emphasized the importance of seat belt use, stating, "Seat belt use should be an automatic habit for everyone. It's not just safe; it's the law. During this campaign, law enforcement agencies will be working together to ensure the message reaches all drivers and passengers. Buckling up is the simplest way to reduce injury or save a life in a crash."

Illinois has had its seat belt law in place since July 1, 1985, making it one of the early adopters among states requiring seat belt usage for drivers and front-seat passengers aged eight and older. The law also mandates appropriate child safety seats for children under eight years old. In July 2003, Illinois enhanced this legislation by permitting officers to stop and ticket drivers solely for not wearing a seat belt, resulting in increased compliance.

Since its introduction and subsequent strengthening over two decades ago, Illinois has seen a rise in seat belt usage from 15.9% in 1985 to 92.4% by 2024. This increase highlights the effectiveness of these laws in promoting safety on roadways.
