Cook County is advancing efforts towards a more sustainable future, with Cicero contributing significantly to this initiative. Recently, the Cicero Public Library collaborated with the Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability and the Environmental Justice Advisory Committee to host a community event.
The gathering attracted over 75 participants, including local officials and community members. Notable attendees included Cook County Commissioner Frank Aguilar, Executive Director of Housing Tom Tomschin, and library representatives Anthony Grazzini, Mary Hernandez, and Rosalba Raygoza. The focus was on environmental justice and policy development, leading to meaningful discussions about achieving a greener future for Cicero and its surroundings.
The event commenced with a bilingual presentation of the draft Environmental Justice (EJ) policy, showcasing ongoing projects like lead service line replacements and zoning updates. Participants then engaged in smaller group discussions on critical issues such as air quality, wastewater management, and water quality. These interactions fostered optimism for tangible change.
The success of the event highlighted the leadership of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cicero Town President Larry Dominick. Their dedication to empowering communities ensures residents can influence policies affecting their health and quality of life. Special acknowledgment was given to Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability Director Deborah Stone, Deputy Director Kevin Schnoes, and their team for organizing the impactful event.
This meeting emphasized collective action's role in creating a sustainable future. The path to a greener Cicero begins with each resident's involvement. The public is encouraged to visit the Cicero Public Library to learn more about environmental justice and find ways to contribute at home towards a healthier environment.
