Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García, representing Illinois' 4th district in the U.S. Congress, has made several public statements regarding recent political developments involving former President Donald Trump. García, who succeeded Luis Gutiérrez in 2019 and has been active in politics since serving in the Illinois Senate from 1993 to 1999 and on the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 2011 to 2018, addressed Trump's actions through a series of tweets.
On January 21, 2025, Congressman García released a statement concerning Trump's speech and executive orders. In his post, he stated: "My statement on Trump’s speech and executive orders."
Shortly thereafter, also on January 21, García provided a Spanish version of his earlier statement: "Mí declaración sobre el discurso y las órdenas ejecutivas de Trump."
Later that day, Congressman García commented on Scott Bessent's nomination as Secretary of the Treasury by Trump. He criticized Bessent's stance against raising the federal minimum wage: "Scott Bessent, Trump’s pick for Secretary of the Treasury, opposes raising the $7.25 an hour minimum wage... Easy for someone with $521 million worth in assets to deny American workers!" This remark highlights García's concern over economic disparities affecting American workers.
