The Chicago metropolitan area has experienced significantly less rainfall this September, with only 0.04 inches recorded compared to the average of 1.73 inches, according to the National Weather Service. This lack of rain has led to an increase in reports from residents about unpleasant odors described as "gross, fishy wafts of stank."

The primary cause of these odors is believed to be the reduced amount of rainwater diluting wastewater in sewers. With less rain, there is a higher concentration of wastewater, making sewer smells more prominent.

Residents are encouraged to report any noticeable odors to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD). Complaints can be submitted through an online application or by calling 800-332-3867. These reports will assist the MWRD in determining if the issue falls within their jurisdiction and allow them to take appropriate action.
