Residents of Riverside are gearing up to Get Wild in Riverside on Global Big Day, a celebration of birdwatching set to take place on Saturday, May 11. The event promises a variety of activities, exhibits, and programs for all ages to enjoy.
According to Riverside Village Trustee Jill Mateo, an avid birdwatcher, Riverside's Important Birding Area plays a crucial role in providing food and shelter for migrating birds. Mateo expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating, "It's accessible to all our neighbors, nestled within our National Historic Landmark. This day is a wonderful way to highlight the fun of birdwatching, right here in Riverside."
The day's activities include birdwatching sessions where participants can log their sightings on eBird.org, a bird walk to observe avian residents and migratory visitors, a native plant giveaway, and a conservation program by Brookfield Zoo Chicago. Additionally, there will be opportunities to engage in crafting bird-themed items and participate in a scavenger hunt.
Get Wild in Riverside is a collaborative effort involving the Riverside C4 Team, Riverside Parks and Recreation, Brookfield Zoo Chicago, Riverside Landscape Advisory Commission, and the University of Illinois Extension.
