The Riverside Golf Club, home to one of the oldest and most historic golf courses in the country, is grappling with an act of vandalism as a strategic tree on hole 10 was intentionally set on fire this week, according to a statement from the club's director, Jay Dalicandro.

In a note to members, Dalicandro expressed dismay over the deliberate destruction of the tree, which had long been a point of contention among members.

"Regardless of your opinion on this tree, someone felt strong enough that they are the final authority, and started the inside of the tree on fire knowing too well that the tree would now have to come down,” Dalicandro said.

The incident was reported to the Grounds Committee and Board of Directors, who were already in the process of determining which trees should be removed and replaced.

Dalicandro emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated, and the damaged tree on hole 10 has already been removed as part of the club's ongoing tree management plan.

Seeking cooperation from members, he urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Riverside Golf Club, established in 1893 and located 12 miles from downtown Chicago, features a historic 18-hole course designed by W.B. Langford.

Situated on 125 acres along the Des Plaines River, the club offers a variety of activities, including golf, poolside relaxation, dining and exclusive events.

Dalicandro has been the President at Westbrook Strategic Consulting since 2014.
