State Sen. John Curran (R-Lemont) is dismissing proposals from his Democratic colleagues to battle carjacking. Curran said the proposals wouldn’t do much other than wasting the dollars of taxpayers.

“The recent proposals introduced do very little to move the needle on this very serious issue," Curran posted on Facebook on April 5. "They simply just add bureaucracy and taxpayer dollars to this epidemic and do nothing to actually hold offenders accountable for their actions. If we really want to get serious on crime, we need to start having real conversations about ways to deter this kind of activity."

According to the Daily Journal, HB 3699 – sponsored by Sen. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) – would provide funding to law enforcement groups toward the identification and arrest of  carjackers. “We’re obviously in very deep budget negotiations and we’re trying to identify funding sources for all of this,” said Martwick at a news conference. HB 3722 is sponsored by Sen. Omar Aquino (D-Chicago). It would provide protection to the carjacking victims from any kind of fees imposed on their vehicles after it gets stolen, like towing fees or red-light camera tickets.

WTTW reported that in the last ten years, the cases of carjackings in Chicago have tripled. One of the common motives for carjackings is to use the stolen vehicles for other crimes, like a drive-by shooting, said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

According to Axios, more than 1,800 carjacking cases were reported in 2021, in comparison to 603 in 2019 and 1,415 in 2020 in Chicago.
