24

Dominican University's baseball team traveled south for its Opening Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, falling to Centre, North Park and UW-Oshkosh.

Centre

Dominican jumped out to a 6-1 lead after four innings using timely hitting and good pitching from Hayden Young. Down 7-2, the opponents scored nine runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull off the 11-7 comeback win.

Garrett Wano started off his weekend strong, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, adding a walk and an RBI. Grayson Downing also had three hits, scoring one run and picked up an RBI. Gabe McCall, Keegan Brandt and Brandon Diedrich had two hits each. Young's pitching line was 6.0 innings, four hits, two earned with one walk and six strikeouts.

North Park

The second game of DU's Saturday slate saw the Stars trailing 4-0 after the first four innings. However, Dominican rallied with four runs over its final four at-bats to send the contest to extra innings. NPU pushed across four in the top of the 11th and secured the 8-4 win.

Wano picked up two more hits and had a run scored and RBI. Matt Galdi went 2-for-5, adding an RBI. Diedrich had DU's third and final RBI. Justin Gasper pitched well in relief of Bennett Wogan, going 5.1 scoreless innings before giving up four in the 11th.

UW-Oshkosh

DU played early on Sunday to round out its weekend in Hoover, Ala., a back-and-forth contest with UW-Oshkosh. The Stars scored three in the top of the first, but the Titans responded with six in the bottom half. Dominican then pushed two across in the top of the second, only for UW-Oshkosh to answer with two in the bottom of the third.

UWO extended its 8-5 advantage with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. DU scored one in the top of the eighth and tacked one more on in the top of the ninth, but the Titans finished off a 11-7 win.

Wano was 3-for-5 with one double and four RBI. Downing went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot, scoring three runs. Dominican's four errors led to six unearned runs.

The Stars head south to Florida for a Spring Break trip, which begins with a matchup versus Elms College on Sunday, March 6.
