Women's basketball runs win streak to 11

Notes from Morton College women's basketball game vs. Oakton January 13th:

Dylan Van Fleet missed out on her first career 30-point game in the Panthers' 71-39 Skyway Conference win over Oakton. A second-quarter layup originally credited to Van Fleet was scored by Mia Simpson. Van Fleet, who was all over the court, got the assist on the play.

Van Fleet was sensational, finishing with 28 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. She was 10 of 17 from the field, 4 of 8 from 3-point range and 4 of 4 from the line. She had 22 points in the second half, producing 11 points apiece in third and fourth quarters.

Her career high is 29, which came in a 90-51 win over Black Hawk November 20th.

Van Fleet's lost basket turned out to be Morton College's gain. Instead of having three players in double figures, the Panthers had four as Mia Simpson finished with 10 points.

Unsung heroes

The belt for the Panthers "Unsung Heroes" in the win over Oakton goes to Franchesca Metz and Gianine Boado.

The Panthers were a little slow getting out of the gate, falling behind 5-0 in the early going. Metz's back-to-back baskets gave the Panthers 6-5 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish. Metz's line – 6 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and a blocked shot.

Boado came off the bench to give the Panthers a big lift in the second quarter with consecutive three-point plays. The first was the old-fashioned basket, followed by the free throw, while the second was a three-pointers. She scored eight of her 12 points in helping the Panthers to a 27-16 halftime edge.

Boado was 5 of 7 from the field with 4 rebounds and an assist.

The 700 Club

Tadriana Heard is closing in on the 700-point mark for her Morton College career. She had a double-double against Oakton with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore is at 663 points in 36 games.

There's only two women in the Morton College 1,000-point club - Jaime Burandt 1,072 (1995-97) and Tammy Bornheim 1,014 (1997-99). Tyisha Worthy put up 998 points from 2015 to '17.

Half-and-half

Second time this week the Panthers held an opponent to half their scoring average.

Oakton came in averaging 78.5 points per game as Panthers limit to 39. McHenry brought a 75.8 pointsd per game average – the Scots ended up with just 37.

No one-trick pony

While the Panthers lead the nation in made three-pointers, they don't live and die by the three. The Panthers were under 20 percent (8 of 43) against Oakton for the third time this season. However, Morton College was 20 of 29 from two (69 percent) against the Owls.

Morton College is 88 of 145 from two (60.7 percent) in Skyway play.

Record numbers

Morton College (15-2) registered its program-best 11th straight win. The Panthers also are 4-0 in the Skyway, matching the start by the 2016 edition.

The Panthers have been in the NJCAA's top 20 for a Morton College-record 18 consecutive weeks. They're 32-4 in coach Jason Nichols' two seasons at 38th Street and Central Avenue. Morton College also is 18-0 at home and 20-0 against Illinois Region 4 opponents.
