City of Northlake issued the following announcement on Oct. 29.
The City of Northlake is participating in a study by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP). CMAP is the metropolitan area’s agency for planning and distribution of Federal funding for various infrastructure and planning projects.
Twenty-six towns participated in the pavement study. The goal of the study was to develop a pavement management system for each community which would result in a systematic proactive approach to resurfacing, reconstruction and maintenance rather than a reactive approach in which road maintenance is addressed after the need for repair become sevident.
One of the big elements in the study was developing a “Pavement Condition Index” (PCI) which is an overall rating of the current condition of the municipality’s roadways, on a scale of 1 to 100, with a higher score being better.
Northlake’s PCI was determined to be an 81 which was described by the program coordinator as “excellent work – highest I’ve seen among the 26 agencies we’re working with in the region!”
He want on to say “Northlake’s in great shape overall…” and “…maintaining a pavement network at a PCI of 80 is considered ‘optimal’…”
The message concluded with the comment “…keep doing whatever you’re doing!”
The final report, which will contain a 10 year analysis period, will come out in a few months.
Over the past 20 years, infrastructure investment has been a priority in the City of Northlake. It was certainly gratifying to see that an outside regional agency confirmed our approach. Putting off repairs or construction to save money is a false economy, for the final bill is always higher and someone down the road ends up paying it.
Northlake will continue to be committed to a proactive approach to maintaining our infrastructure.
