AMITA Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 15.

The administration, physicians and staff of AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village today celebrated the medical center’s recognition as a five-star recipient for cesarean section delivery by Healthgrades.

This five-star rating by the leading resource connecting consumers, physicians and health systems, highlights AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center’s clinical outcomes for c-section delivery, which are statistically significant.

“A lot of work goes into our planning and preparation for ensuring the safety and comfort of all our expectant mothers,” said Karen Moore, director or women and infant services at AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Medical Center. “This recognition shows the teamwork that happens every day to care for our moms and babies, especially those who are at a higher risk for complications.”

Moore said just some of the initiatives and innovations leading to the five-star rating include:

Identification of high-risk pregnancies through the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program, meeting as a cross-functional team to plan for safe, efficient delivery

Active participation in the state’s Perinatal Quality Program

Early identification and quick control of patients with known hypertension

Establishment of a postpartum hemorrhage program, through which blood loss is measured, not estimated

Ongoing prenatal and postpartum anxiety program, connecting mothers with known anxiety with counselors during and after pregnancy

Close partnership with the operating room surgeons and staff

“Hospital quality should be top of mind for consumers when they evaluate and compare hospital performance,” said Dr. Brad Bowman, chief medical officer for Healthgrades. “Women who select a hospital with a five-star rating can feel confident in their choice knowing that these organizations are committed to providing exceptional women’s care to their patients.”

Healthgrades analysts examined all-payer state data for 16 states for 2016 through 2018. They found there is a significant variation in hospital quality between those that have received five stars and those that have not. For example, according to the Healthgrades data for that time period, women undergoing a c-section delivery in hospitals rated five stars had, on average, a 59.4 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals rated 1-star.
