A registered nurse who at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago says patients who have arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic are among the most seriously ill she has seen in her decade of nursing.

“These are some of the sickest patients we have seen in the hospital,” Katie Martino told NBC Channel 5 in Chicago.

The nurses begin work daily at Northwestern and stay for 12-hour shifts dealing with coronavirus victims. Patrice Rosenberg, who is also a nurse at Northwestern, was there to care for many of the first coronavirus patients at the hospital.

“I think it is overwhelming at times because it is obviously something we’ve never seen before,” Rosenberg said. “We are taking care of a lot more patients than we are used to.”

The nurses report that their families are really worried about them. Long hours and a dangerous pandemic don't mix well.

“Yes, my parents are calling and checking up on me every day,” Rosenberg said
