Rep. Durkin's summer reading challenge aims to reverse 'summer slide'

Summerreading

Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Burr Ridge) is hoping to combat the learning loss known as “summer slide” with an innovative reading program for children.

“When young people aren’t engaged in educational activities during the summer, they can experience learning loss,” Durkin said recently on Facebook. “Summer learning loss erases gains made during the school year, but summer reading programs keep kids growing.”

Durkin’s Summer Reading Club for pre-K through fifth grade students encourages students to read eight books of their choice. Once the students submit the list of books they read, due July 26, they can receive a certificate honoring their achievement, presented Aug. 9 at a free ice cream party.

Participants can obtain the form from the Indian Prairie Public Library, the Lemont Public Library, the Homer Township Public Library, the Thomas Ford Memorial Library or download it here.
