Loyola Health System issued the following announcement on June 14.
MAYWOOD, IL – Kathy Kujawa, MD, PhD, a neurologist who specializes in treating Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, has joined Loyola Medicine.
Movement disorders are neurological conditions that cause tremors, slowness, difficulty walking and other abnormal movements.
In addition to Parkinson's disease, other movement disorders Dr. Kujawa treats include tremor, essential tremor, dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions), Huntington's disease, blepharospasm (dystonia of the eyes and brows) and spasmodic torticollis (dystonia of neck muscles).
Movement disorders are complex conditions that sometimes are misdiagnosed. The disorders can cause other conditions, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and constipation.
Movement disorders are not curable, and some disorders become progressively worse. But education, counseling, medications, physical therapy and lifestyle modifications such as exercise can significantly improve a patient's quality of life, Dr. Kujawa said.
Dr. Kujawa also offers non-cosmetic Botox treatments for movement disorders affecting the face and neck.
A movement disorder affects more than the patient. "It's a family disease," Dr. Kujawa said. "A patient needs a support system. I encourage family members to accompany patients on their doctor visits."
Dr. Kujawa sees patients at the Loyola Outpatient Center in Maywood, Loyola Center for Health at Park Ridge, Loyola Center for Health at Burr Ridge and Loyola Center for Health at Oakbrook Terrace.
Dr. Kujawa earned a medical degree and a PhD in neuroregeneration from Chicago Medical School. She completed a residency in neurology at the University of Maryland Hospital and a fellowship in movement disorders from Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Kujawa is board certified in neurology.
