Five Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) students were honored for their enthusiasm about reading during a Top Reader Awards event at the PMSA library, the school announced recently.

Each student received gift cards, flowers, candy and a certificate.

Isabel Popoca, a senior, has checked out and read 225 books during her four years at the school, while sophomore Alexis Robles is already nearing 300. Alison Brennan, a fan of Manga and fiction, has read more than 100 books this school year, and Sadiya Khan is among the fastest readers and might go through several books in a week. Iyleah Hernandez is a reader who enjoys fiction and nonfiction equally.

Librarian Shoshana Fiala said she enjoys teaching students the importance and joys of reading.

"Discussing literature with these students makes me incredibly happy," she said. "Many more of our avid readers were very close to winning the Top Reader Awards. I am truly honored to be the librarian of so many excited readers."

This is the first time the school has held a Top Readers event.
