Proviso East NJROTC presents colors at state ceremony to honor veterans

The Proviso East High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Color Guard presented the colors at an Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs ceremony recently at the James Thompson Center in Chicago to honor the Tuskegee Airmen and  Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who is also a veteran.

"We are very proud of them," Proviso East Principal Patrick Hardy said about the NJROTC. "Our NJROTC unit continues to succeed and impress in all areas, and I commend them for their hard work and success."

Gov. Bruce Rauner, who attended the ceremony, praised the student cadets.

TheTuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American bomber pilots who fought during World War II.

"We are grateful and humbled to be posting colors for those who have laid down their lives for our freedom," NJROTC Cmdr. Darryl Person, who is also Proviso East's senior naval science instructor, said.
