Winkler Tree Service started trimming and pruning trees in the Village of Western Springs on November 24. The work will continue through the winter until the designated funds are depleted or tree buds have formed.
The tree maintenance began in Old Town North, moving east from Grove and Prospect Avenue. After finishing in Old Town North, crews will proceed to Fairview Estates, followed by Commonwealth Avenue.
Residents are advised to be careful near areas where trimming operations are underway.
According to village officials, “Tree trimming/pruning is intended to improve tree structure, improve tree health, and maintain safe conditions for all motorists and pedestrians.”
The village noted several benefits of a regular tree-pruning cycle: enhancement of tree condition and shape; reduction in storm-related damage; decreased interference with power lines; fewer drastic changes in appearance after pruning; and lower overall pruning costs due to less work needed per tree.
Western Springs operates as a local government under a council-manager system, which separates policy-making from administration. Public services are delivered by professional staff who support advisory boards composed of resident volunteers offering expert reviews and recommendations on community issues. More information about this structure can be found on the official website.
Village offices are located at 740 Hillgrove Avenue. The village manager oversees personnel and implements policies set by the elected president and board of trustees, who serve as volunteers. Residents also participate as volunteers on various boards and commissions that address local matters and provide guidance to officials (source).
Tree trimming is one aspect of maintaining public safety and healthy urban forestry within this administrative framework.
