Due to heavy snowfall in early December, the Village of Western Springs has announced that leaf collection will not resume for the remainder of the season. Public Works staff had collected as many leaves as possible during the last week of November before transitioning equipment to handle snow removal for the first storm.

According to village officials, “Significant early December snowfall, followed by frigid temperatures, requires that equipment and vehicles be dedicated to snow removal going forward.” The statement added, “The Village regrets that leaf piles mixed into the snow were plowed along driveways and onto parkways, but it was imperative to clear the streets before temperatures dropped, and the snow and leaf piles became immovable.”

If weather conditions improve later in the season, crews may move leaves from streets and driveway aprons onto parkways and consider street sweeping. After winter ends, officials will assess whether additional leaf removal is necessary or possible.

Residents are reminded not to place leaves, snow, or other debris in roadways. The village emphasized that “Snow clearing operations requires curb-to-curb plowing and salting to maintain safety throughout the community.”

The Village thanked residents for their understanding and cooperation.
