The Western Springs Police Department has issued a warning to residents about recent phone scams reported in the area. According to the department, neighboring police agencies have noted several incidents where callers claim to be sergeants from local police departments. These calls often appear to come from local numbers and involve urgent requests for money, allegedly to resolve arrest warrants or other legal matters.

The scam typically involves instructions for victims to transfer money or deposit cash into bitcoin ATMs. The police department emphasized that law enforcement will “NEVER ask you to transfer money, buy gift cards, or use bitcoin terminals.” They added that officers can provide specific case or report numbers so residents can independently verify any referenced incident.

Residents are encouraged by the department: “Encourage you to verify their identify by allowing you to call the Police Department directly, or by encouraging you to come into the Police Station in person.”

Authorities also advise against sharing sensitive information such as social security numbers, bank details, or one-time codes over the phone with unconfirmed callers.

If someone receives such a call, officials recommend hanging up immediately and not responding to any callbacks. Residents are advised: “It’s recommended that you file a police report, preferably in person, at the Police Station.”

Western Springs operates under a council-manager form of government designed to separate policy-making from administration and relies on professional staff who support advisory boards and commissions composed of resident volunteers. These boards help address community issues and provide recommendations. More information about local governance is available on the official website.

Village offices are located at 740 Hillgrove Avenue. The village manager oversees personnel and implements policies set by elected officials who serve as volunteers within this structure (source).
