West Central Consolidated Communications has announced the launch of a Text-to-911 service, allowing residents in its coverage area to send text messages directly to 911 dispatchers during emergencies. The new service is intended for situations where calling may not be safe or possible, such as for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or experiencing domestic violence.
“Text-to-911 provides an additional way for our community members to reach emergency services when they need it most,” said Michael J. Garvey, President at Village of Brookfield. “While we still encourage people to call if they can, texting is now an option for those who are unable to speak.”
Officials emphasized that voice calls remain the fastest and most effective method for reaching emergency help but recognized that the new text feature could assist vulnerable populations and improve overall safety in the region.
The Text-to-911 service is now available across all areas served by West Central Consolidated Communications.
