The Village of Riverside announced on Aug. 23 that all new building permit applications and contractor licenses must now be submitted online through the BS&A Online portal.

This change affects residents and contractors planning to begin most building or construction projects, including alterations, repairs, and mechanical replacements. The move to an online system is intended to streamline the application process and improve tracking for users.

Applicants are required to create a BS&A Online account or log in with an existing one. Through the portal, users can track project progress, schedule inspections, submit documents, and review property details. Status updates will be provided at each step of the process. The first update confirms successful submission of the application; however, permits are not approved until intake, plan review, issuance steps are complete, and payment is received. Once reviews are finished, applicants receive an email notification that their permit review is complete. When the permit is ready for pickup, another email provides a link to pay the fee.

The Village of Riverside promotes cultural awareness through its historical commission and public library programs, according to the official website. The village also aims to deliver municipal services responsibly while upholding its historical heritage and community atmosphere according to the official website.

Riverside stands out for its landscape design by Frederick Law Olmsted, a pioneer in landscape architecture according to the official website. Services provided by the village include fire suppression, emergency medical care, law enforcement, parks programs, and public library access according to the official website.

The village functions as a suburban municipality focused on community management and historical preservation according to the official website. It was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1970 for its role in national history according to the official website.
