Cook County is experiencing its first snowstorm of the season, with the Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) actively plowing the 1,620 lane miles under its care to maintain road safety.
The DoTH has advised motorists to exercise caution when driving in winter conditions. Drivers are urged to slow down and be aware of snowplows operating on county roads. Ed Tully, maintenance bureau chief at DoTH, stated: “Don’t crowd the plows while they are working to clear the roads. Your best bet is to stay a safe distance behind the plow so you can drive over freshly plowed and salted roadways.”
Residents are also encouraged to keep an emergency kit in their vehicles in case of breakdowns or if they become stuck during severe weather. The recommended kit includes items such as a shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight with extra batteries, battery-powered radio, water, snack food like energy bars, matches and small candles, extra hats and mittens, a first aid kit with pocketknife, necessary medications, blankets or a sleeping bag, tow chain or rope, road salt or sand for traction, jumper cables, emergency flares and reflectors, a fluorescent distress flag and whistle for attention-getting purposes, and a cell phone adapter for charging.
The department suggests reversing batteries in flashlights to prevent accidental power drain and storing all items inside the passenger compartment in case access to the trunk becomes impossible due to freezing.
