Hundreds of families gathered at the Early Childhood Center in Cicero for a back-to-school fair organized by State Senator Javier Loera Cervantes in partnership with the Town of Cicero and President Larry Dominick. The event distributed nearly 600 backpacks filled with school supplies, along with information from local organizations and family activities.
Senator Cervantes, who grew up in a single-parent household and is now a parent himself, said he understands the financial challenges that come with preparing children for the school year. “I know how expensive it can be to get our little ones ready for school,” he said. “This is about connecting with families, getting to know the community, and most importantly, giving back to our youth.”
Families also received resources from groups such as Mujeres Latinas en Acción and participated in activities like face painting. Cervantes noted that resources are not always easy for families to obtain, so the fair was designed as a one-stop event to meet multiple needs.
President Dominick praised the community turnout and the event’s impact. “School is a big expense, no matter where you go,” he said. “Every little bit helps. You can see there are a lot of happy families here, and that’s what matters.” He encouraged students to stay in school and parents to ensure their children attend regularly.
First Lady and Senior Center Director Diana Dominick addressed students as they begin the new academic year. “My advice to every student is to do your best, stay focused, and remember that education opens doors to your future,” she said. “This is your time to learn, grow, and make your dreams happen.”
Early Childhood Center Principal Thomas Geraghty expressed his excitement about the event, noting that it helps spark enthusiasm for learning and eases the financial burden on families. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the district’s use of the center, which offers both morning and afternoon preschool sessions.
Other officials attending included Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias, Town Assessor Emilio Cundari, Trustees John Cava and Blanca Vargas, and Business License Director Ismael Vargas. Sponsors such as La Casa Norte, Youth Crosswords, and Family Focus contributed support for the event.
Organizers hoped every backpack would reach a student in need. They emphasized that beyond providing supplies, the event was about fostering unity and supporting students’ confidence as they start school.
Cicero District 99 students will return to class on Wednesday, August 13.
