Cicero families gathered for the annual Back to School Fair, an event organized by the Town of Cicero in partnership with District 99 and the Department of Special Events. The fair provided free school supply kits and book bags to help families prepare for the upcoming academic year.
“This is one of my favorite events every year,” said District 99 Board President Tom Tomschin. “Graduation and back to school—these events show how we’re truly one town, one community. When Town President Larry Dominick took office in 2005, his goal was to improve the life of a child every day. That mission continues today.”
Families arrived early and waited in line for supplies intended to ease financial burdens as children return to school. “It’s just one less thing for mom and dad to worry about,” said District 99 Superintendent Dr. Aldo Calderin. “We’re helping make things a little easier for families.”
District 99 used the event as an opportunity to announce new projects, including plans to replace Burnham School with a new Early Childhood Center by 2027, and construction of a staff parking lot at Sherlock School next summer aimed at reducing neighborhood congestion.
Dr. Calderin highlighted the importance of cooperation between schools and families: “Events like this show how deeply we value our community. When students are in school every day, they grow academically, socially, and emotionally. That’s why it’s so important.” He also addressed parents directly: “We’re here to support you, at the schools and at the district office. It’s a challenging time, but we’re in this together.”
Town Trustee Blanca Vargas acknowledged leadership from Town President Larry Dominick and thanked both him and the Cicero Board of Trustees for their ongoing efforts. “Initiatives like today’s fair are essential. Our children need supplies and support to succeed. I’m thankful to see so many families come out—and grateful for the sunshine too!”
The Department of Special Events played a key role in organizing activities ranging from live music and inflatables to pony rides and snacks.
“The event is always a great success thanks to amazing team effort,” said Special Events Director Patricia Salerno. “The families of Cicero came out in full force as early as 9 a.m. to get in line. This event is a great opportunity for families to get school supplies. We had over 1,500 people attend on Sunday. There was plenty for them to do—free giveaways, live music, a rock wall, inflatables, pony rides, a petting zoo, yummy snacks, and much more. It’s always great to see families come out and kids enjoying their time.”
She added: “Summer in the Park has been growing over the years, and we have such amazing support from President Dominick to continue to make it happen for our residents. The Department of Special Events is always looking for new and exciting activities for families. The staff we have is dedicated to making the events memorable for everyone.”
Children attending expressed enthusiasm about returning to class; among them was Auriyana Montenegro who looked forward to meeting her teacher while enjoying music and activities at the fair.
