The Cicero Mustangs began their flag football season on July 13 at Drexel Park, with President Larry Dominick participating in the opening ceremony. Dominick threw the first football to officially start the season for nearly 200 local youth.

Christina Hernandez, a board member of the Mustangs, emphasized that the organization focuses on community building and providing opportunities for children beyond just football and cheerleading. “We have a cheer squad, we have flag football, and we also have our competitive program,” she said. “We’re a nonprofit, and we try to help low-income families a lot because it’s important to have the kids off the streets.”

Hernandez noted that over 20 children are sponsored each season by the board members who cover expenses personally. “If the kids really want to play a sport, we feel like their parents’ income shouldn’t matter,” she added.

President Dominick has played a key role in supporting the Mustangs' growth. “He’s helped us a lot, especially with our cheer program,” said Hernandez. “He’s sponsored several girls’ uniforms over the past two years.”

Dominick spoke about sports' positive impact on young people. “When you play sports, you stay out of trouble,” he stated. He also highlighted parental involvement as crucial: “Make sure the parents come out and watch their kids play. It makes a big difference.”

The event saw participation from various coaches like Eloy Montalvo of the Bulldogs and Adrian Hernandez of Team Rampage, who contribute significantly to nurturing young talent.

Cheer Coach Israel Ibarra mentioned how more girls are joining the program and encouraged parents to let their daughters participate.

As games commenced under sunny skies, Dominick reiterated why programs like Mustangs are vital for community strength: “Being a coach is tough, but it’s worth it.”
